Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Shepherd’s Pie is the perfect dish when you need something warm, filling, and full of flavor. With a savory meat and vegetable base topped by creamy mashed potatoes, it’s a classic that never goes out of style. Simple to make and loved by all ages, this hearty meal is sure to bring everyone together around the table.

Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 500g ground lamb (or beef for Cottage Pie)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or chicken stock
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter

For the mashed potatoes:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled & cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions:

Prepare mashed potatoes:

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (about 15 minutes).
  2. Drain, mash with butter and milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Make the filling:

  1. Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Add onion and carrots; cook 5 minutes until soft.
  3. Add garlic and ground lamb; cook until browned.
  4. Stir in tomato paste and flour; cook 1 minute.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, stock, thyme, peas, salt & pepper.
  6. Simmer 10 minutes until thickened.

Assemble:

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. Spread the meat filling evenly in a baking dish.
  3. Top with mashed potatoes, spreading them out with a spatula. Use a fork to make decorative ridges.

Bake:

  1. Bake 20 minutes or until the top is golden and crispy.
  2. Serve hot — perfect with steamed greens or crusty bread!
